62 Vehicle Breakdown Statistics on Causes, Trends and Outcomes

Vehicle breakdown statistics show a large but uneven service burden. The figures below cover provider workloads in Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom, with dates, populations and definitions kept explicit because roadside-assistance data is not a universal census of every failure.

Key Vehicle Breakdown Statistics

The most useful headline figures are:

  • More than 3.6 million ADAC roadside-assistance deployments occurred in Germany in 2024.
  • AAA received more than 27 million emergency roadside-service calls in the United States in 2024.
  • Starter-battery failure or discharge represented 44.9% of ADAC breakdowns in Germany in 2024.
  • Engine, engine-management or high-voltage-system problems represented 22% of ADAC deployments in Germany in 2024.
  • Tire problems represented 8.8% of ADAC deployments in Germany in 2024.
  • AAA estimated roughly 13 million vehicles required towing in the United States in 2024.
  • AAA estimated approximately 7 million U.S. roadside calls involved battery issues in 2024.

Provider totals establish scale, but they describe each organization’s service population rather than every breakdown in a country.

These totals should not be added together or treated as countrywide incidence rates. ADAC, AAA and The AA use different memberships, geographies and category definitions.

Vehicle Breakdown Causes, Towing and Assistance Outcomes

Battery-related faults are prominent in both German and U.S. service data, while towing figures describe an outcome rather than a single mechanical cause.

Measure Period and geography Result
Starter-battery failure or discharge ADAC, Germany, 2024 44.9% of breakdowns
Engine, engine-management or high-voltage problems ADAC, Germany, 2024 22% of deployments
Generator, starter, onboard electrical or lighting problems ADAC, Germany, 2024 10.6% of deployments
Tire problems ADAC, Germany, 2024 8.8% of deployments
Keys, locks or immobilizer issues ADAC, Germany, 2024 6.9% of deployments
Bodywork, steering, brakes, suspension or transmission ADAC, Germany, 2024 6.7% of deployments

The category shares are from ADAC’s roadside-assistance workload, and some categories combine multiple systems. ADAC Pannenhilfe-Bilanz 2024: 965.000 Einsätze in NRW

AAA’s 2024 U.S. figures used rounded estimates: approximately 7 million calls involved battery issues, roughly 13 million vehicles required towing, and towing plus battery issues represented roughly 74% of calls. Because towing is a service outcome and battery issues are a category, the combined share should not be read as two mutually exclusive mechanical causes. AAA’s 2014 fact sheet gives more detailed historical outcomes within its service population:

  • Seventeen million calls were attributed mainly to batteries, flat tires and keys locked inside vehicles.
  • AAA towed more than 2 million vehicles for engine-related issues, nearly 600,000 for transmission failures and more than 235,000 for brake-system failures.
  • AAA delivered gasoline to more than 500,000 vehicles that ran out of fuel and towed more than 13,000 vehicles after misfueling.

Electric and Combustion Vehicle Breakdown Statistics

ADAC’s 2024 comparison provides an age-matched German view of breakdown rates, while U.S. and UK figures describe provider workloads or specific EV categories.

Vehicle or measure Period and population Result
Electric vehicles ADAC Germany, age 2–4, 2024 3.8 breakdowns per 1,000
Combustion vehicles ADAC Germany, age 2–4, 2024 9.4 breakdowns per 1,000
EV starter-battery breakdowns ADAC Germany, 2024 50.5% of EV breakdowns
Combustion starter-battery breakdowns ADAC Germany, 2024 44.6% of combustion breakdowns
EV assistance cases ADAC Germany, 2024 About 44,000
EV roadside-service calls AAA United States, 2024 Roughly 215,000

ADAC reported that two-to-four-year-old combustion vehicles had 2.5 times as many breakdowns as comparable electric vehicles. For starter-battery faults in that age range, the rates were 1.7 per 1,000 EVs and 4.0 per 1,000 combustion vehicles. ADAC Pannenstatistik 2025: Elektroautos zuverlässiger als Verbrenner

ADAC’s EV breakdown count rose 46% from 2023 to 2024 while the EV stock rose 97%; those are different denominators. Its separate regional report also recorded a 46% increase in EV assistance cases to about 44,000, with starter-battery faults causing 50% of EV cases. ADAC Pannenhilfe-Bilanz 2024: 965.000 Einsätze in NRW

AAA’s estimated 215,000 U.S. EV calls represented about 0.8% of its 2024 roadside-service events. In the UK, The AA reported that out-of-charge cases were 1.85% of EV breakdowns in 2024, compared with 2.26% in its rolling 12-month measure for 2023; the definition includes low-charge or charging-related cases. Vehicle Breakdown Data by Model and Age

ADAC’s 2024 model study covered 159 model series and uses Pannenkennziffer: breakdowns per 1,000 registered vehicles in eligible model and first-registration-year groups. It is not a probability for every vehicle on the road.

  • The Toyota C-HR first registered in 2020 recorded 63.1 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles, the highest rate cited in the analysis.
  • The Toyota Yaris Cross recorded 40.0 per 1,000, the Toyota Yaris 29.2 per 1,000, and the Toyota RAV4 18.4 per 1,000.
  • The Hyundai Ioniq 5 recorded 22.4 per 1,000; ADAC linked the high rate to ICCU problems and a recall, so this is not a general EV rate.
  • The best two-year-old combustion observations were the MINI at 0.3 per 1,000 and Audi A4 at 0.4 per 1,000, while the best two-year-old EV was the Tesla Model 3 at 0.5 per 1,000.
  • Twelve models recorded fewer than 1 breakdown per 1,000 vehicles.

ADAC Pannenstatistik 2025: Elektroautos zuverlässiger als Verbrenner

ADAC’s model-by-registration-year table also shows why age and model should be read together. The Suzuki Ignis rates were 2.3, 1.9 and 2.2 per 1,000 for first-registration years 2022, 2021 and 2020; Toyota Aygo rates were 1.9, 4.6 and 5.5; and VW up! rates were 1.8, 2.7 and 5.1.

These are separate registration-year observations, not single age averages. Pannenstatistik 2025

Battery, Tire and Preventive-Maintenance Statistics

Vehicle age is a major context for interpreting breakdown exposure. The average age of vehicles needing ADAC assistance was 12.9 years in 2023, and ADAC reported the highest breakdown probability among vehicles aged 18 to 23 years. ADAC Pannenstatistik 2025: Elektroautos zuverlässiger als Verbrenner

Maintenance behavior is measured separately from breakdown incidence:

  • AAA’s 2014 maintenance fact sheet said more than one-third of Americans skipped or delayed vehicle service or repair; this is a self-reported survey measure, not an observed breakdown rate.
  • AAA’s 2014 guidance recommended annual battery testing once a vehicle battery reaches three years of age; this is preventive guidance, not a failure probability.
  • In an AA member poll in January 2024, 82% preferred a spare wheel to a tire-inflation kit. The result is an online member poll, not a representative national probability sample. Range Anxiety should be a thing of the past

ADAC recorded 59,000 cases in Germany in 2024 where a vehicle could not be opened without assistance, within the key and lock-related service context. ADAC Pannenhilfe-Bilanz 2024: 965.000 Einsätze in NRW

ADAC’s 2024 German data shows a distinct winter and January concentration:

  • The busiest Germany-wide day was 9 January, with 19,714 deployments; the busiest day in North Rhine-Westphalia was the same date, with 5,563 deployments.
  • January was the strongest German breakdown month, with about 377,000 deployments.
  • ADAC crews traveled 46.1 million kilometers on German roads during 2024 assistance operations.

ADAC Pannenhilfe-Bilanz 2024: 965.000 Einsätze in NRW

Digital access is also becoming a measurable part of the service process. More than 600,000 of ADAC’s 3.6 million German breakdown reports were submitted digitally in 2024, and ADAC said digital reports rose 20% from 2023 to 2024. ADAC Pannenhilfe-Bilanz 2024: 965.000 Einsätze in NRW

The AA handles approximately 8,000 breakdowns per day across all vehicle categories in the UK. Its 2024 workload included only five or six out-of-charge EV cases per day, and the out-of-charge EV share fell from 8.26% in 2015 to 1.85% in 2024; this is a longitudinal AA workload measure whose vehicle mix and service coverage can change over time.
